A downtown can be both beautiful and ugly, both beckoning and unfriendly, both intriguing and commonplace. We think of its parts mostly in functional terms: as a place to live and work; but each component (factory, office building, bridge, sidewalk, park, etc.) was built with an aesthetic consideration.
