A smile is one half of a "visual handshake" where people flash their flesh-eating appurtenances. It is supposed to mean something like: "I mean you no harm," or "I want to paint your picture," but it has also been perverted to mean: "I want to sell you a set of encyclopedias." [AAR-4]
